With multi segment carbon/graphite sealing rings,
tight tolerances for assembly are not necessary.
When installed, the rings must have a certain
clearance at the segment joints, so that, under the
pressure of the gar-ter spring, they work initially as
contact seals.
It is only after slight wear dur-ing running-in
that the joint clearance becomes zero and the seal can
run practically as a gap seal, with minimum gap losses
and consequently high sealing effect.
